problems when making espresso…?
I just got my new espresso machine yesterday but i am having a few problems with it. whenever i make my espresso at home, i noticed that the ground coffee is always soaking wet whenever i remove it from the machine. from what i know, it should be dry and when i discard it, it should be intact and should fall out in one piece. i don’t know why but mine’s been really soggy and wet. Does anyone know how to fix this? it would really be of great help
thanks!
Can you put regular ground coffee in a stovetop espesso maker?
I just received my espresso maker in the mail but not yet have received my ground espresso. The ground coffee I have in mind to use in my espresso maker is ‘Chock full of nuts,’ and I have a friend who thinks that you can still get the same energy using coffee grounds in the espresso machine. I’m not concerned about the quality of it — I just want it to be strong. I’m a complete novice when it comes to affairs of coffee, so any advice?
How do you grind coffee beans?
Here’s the deal: Husband goes to grocery and buys coffee. Comes home and notices he bought whole bean instead of ground coffee. We don’t have a coffee grinder and don’t want to buy one. Is there a way to grind the beans some other way with common household items?
espresso blend?
It’s been 2 years since i have used my old espresso machine and i would just like to ask what type of coffee to use. Is any type of bean ok as long as its ground really fine, or was it coarse? i forgot… I am currently using Movenpick Espresso coffe…
also is it ok to use regular ground coffee in an espresso machine… thanks..
Can I grind whole coffee beans in a food chopper?
I accidentially bought whole beans rather that the ground coffee and I don’t have a coffee grinder. Would a food chopper work? Any other suggestions?
What is the best coffee maker for under £180 pounds?
I’d like to be able to use both pods and ground coffee – I’d be making max two cups at a time, and likely to be drinking espresso and capaccino/ lattes.
I quite like the look of retro ones – but it’s not essential
What is the best ground coffee to buy at starbucks?
I went to starbucks last week and noticed they had a shelf in the back full of different kinds of ground coffee. I wanted to buy one for my mom but i didnt know which one was best. Which is the one you buy more and think taste better??
What is the best ground coffee brand and flavor?
I currently drink Folgers French Roast…and I am so sick of it!
I am looking for the best store bought ground coffee to get. I don’t want to ground my own; too messy and time consuming for a single gal like me. Also, I am looking for a coffee that will be available at the grocery store, not only found at a special coffee house or something…
So, what’s your favorite coffee for morning??
Why does my espresso machine produce the occassional silty/gritty coffee?
I have a Kenwood Cafe Retro espresso machine and it occassionally produces a really silty gritty coffee in which some of the coffee ground has made it into the cup, thus deeming it undrinkable. I make sure I tighten the arm tightly to maintain a good seal and I compact down the coffee ground nicely. This probably happens once every 5 coffees and is very annoying. Is it a problem that can be resolved? Am I doing something wrong or is my machine beginning to give up? I have asked a similar question before but did not get any useful answers, thus I am asking again.
Hope someone can help.
In response to your question, I have never really cleaned it. However about 1 month ago I did run vinegar infused water through the system countless times which did not seem to yeild results. However if I leave the machine unused for a week or two it seems to produce an AMAZING coffee and then it would go tempramental after that. I would love to know what I am doing wrong or indeed whether the machine is failing. I’d also love to know simply why this happens. Could I just need a replacement metal filter??
In response to JSin, I use Illy and Lavazza ground coffee. I apreciate your answer as it seems likely that the pressure is to blame, and you’ve allowed me to realise this. I also apreciate you looking for reviews of the machine. I am planning on getting a Delonghi espresso machine as a replacement. Are they generally good?
My espresso machine is not pouring evenly?
I just bought an espresso machine, and in the part where the water pours into the coffee mug, there are two spouts (just in case i want to pour into two different cups). Anyways, one of the spouts starts out pouring but then it starts to drip, whereas the other spout remains a steady stream.
i have made espresso on this thing 5 times so far and its always the same spout that drips, and I have done everything I can to ensure that its packed tightly and distributed evenly when I pack (ie, ‘tamp’) it. The machine comes with a spoon where you use to spoon part to scoop up the ground coffee, and you use the handle of the spoon to pack it in evenly. the handle fits the size of the container that holds the ground coffee so it’s easy to pack it in evenly, or at least so I thought.
Any suggestions on what I’m doing wrong? The spout doesn’t appear to have blockage, it also appears to be the same size as the other spout. Thanks for any help,
Coffee gurus needed! Best espresso machine for a college kid on a budget?
I am a college student, and I work as a barista to help pay for school. I’m entertaining the idea of buying my own small espresso machine, but I don’t really know what kind to get. I’ve only ever used restaurant-grade machines before, and I don’t know what to look for in a small machine. I want it to have a wand, and I want to be able to use ground coffee (no pods).
I see stuff about steam powered vs. pump-powered machines, and shamefully, even though I work in 2 coffeeshops, I don’t know what that means. It sounds to me like pump machines are more powerful than steam-powered ones, but I don’t know if that’s correct.
Also, I need the machine to be cheap…because minimum wage really doesn’t go all that far. So far I like the look of the DeLonghi EC155, which looks like it usually goes for around . Here it is:

Anyway, I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts, since I don’t really know what I’m doing.
Thanks a lot!
How to use my espresso machine…?
Ok, so here’s the deal.
I have an espresso machine, it used to be my mom’s and she gave it to me just recently. It’s several years old and hasn’t been used in a while, which I don’t think really matters as long as it’s clean. I ran some water through it to clean it out… but now I don’t honestly know HOW to use it. lol.
I would put my coffee in it but I’m worried if I do it wrong I’ll just waste coffee. PLUS I see people making a big deal out of the pods, which is actually what I THINK I have. They’re espresso roast "individually packaged ground coffee" packets with a little (I’m guessing) pod from Starbucks that my aunt and mom bought me and my roommate as a house warming gift for our apartment. I want to make some espresso with them… but I have no clue what I do with the machine. Which I know makes me sound kiiiinda stupid buuuut I would rather get some advice about how to work it before I go wasting all of our packets of espresso.
It’s a Swift espresso, coffee, cappuccino machine which I’m sure isn’t the most top of the line machine but I’m fairly positive it’ll get the job done as long as I know how to do it right!! The only knob it has is on the side and it goes one way to work the foamer and the other way to make the coffee/espresso.
I would just like some help, or a walkthrough, of the process it takes to make a good espresso shot. I hope I don’t sound TOO ignorant for you coffee connoisseurs. If someone could just tell me exactly what to do to get the best cup of coffee/espresso that would be GREAT!!!
There aren’t any instructions and I’ve looked online for a users manual and can’t find one.
Plus I came upon a comment someone made to someone else saying it’s a crappy machine altogether.
THAT being said…. I still want to know how to make some espresso so I can at least have some BURNT espresso!!
Although thanks Diana, so far you have the best answer!! I think I’ll try it.
I know it sounds stupid, but I just needed that simple walkthrough to make sure what I was thinking was the right thing to do. Especially the amount of water to use.
How can I store coffee without everything smelling like it?
For months I’ve been keeping our coffee in a kitchen cabinet, but it’s always annoyed me that our storage containers (the empty ones kept in the same cupboard) smell like coffee! Is there any way to store ground coffee without the entire cabinet smelling like a cafe?
Please don’t tell me to freeze or refrigerate the coffee…I used to work with coffee and know that only promotes mold.
Where can you buy Caribou Coffee in bulk?
This is not in regards to coffee beans or ground coffee. I like the cans of caribou, the espresso and coffee for example. They come in silver cans and are available at gas stations and target (and few other vendors). Is there anywhere to buy them in bulk? I can’t even find where to on caribou’s website. Thanks.
where can i buy whole coffee beans in the UK?and a coffee grinder?
i have a guest from the US coming to stay with me -i know he only likes fresh ground coffee-but,me being a coffee hater, knows nothing about the fine art of coffee making..where can i buy whole coffee beans, and a grinder? supermarkets only seem to sell instant .I really want to make him feel at home, and surprise him with this.
Just acquired an espresso machine & don't know how to use it – can anyone help?
Can’t get hold of instructions for my model, but checked out current manuals online & they seem pretty complicated – ‘priming’ them &waiting 6 mins to build pressure; I thought it was just a case of adding water & espresso-ground coffee in the appropriate places! Any clues gratefully received!!
If i buy coffee beans does that mean that I have to grind them myself?
I bought some dunkin donuts coffee beans and got my first coffee maker. It says to put in 1 tablespoon of ground coffee for every cup, but i have coffee beans. Does this mean i have to grind them up myself?
Buying espresso beans in bulk…?
Sooo the bistro I work at is still in the opening stages and we haven’t yet gotten the supplies together for espresso beverages yet. I used to work as a barista, so I’ve been delegated the task of getting this together. The part I’m having trouble with is selecting a company to supply our espresso beans, any suggestions? I’m kind of a coffee snob, but the drip coffee that’s served at the restaurant comes in pre-ground bags (it hurts me if I think about it too much) so I guess top-tier gourmet beans aren’t a requisite. Also, should I take the cheap route and buy pre-ground or invest in a decent grinder? How quickly does the quality of pre-ground coffee deteriorate? I’d honestly like to buy from a local roaster (I live in NE OK), but since I probably won’t be able to eke the money out of my boss for high-quality beans, I’m okay with ordering out-of-state.
Thanks ![]()
Can you take already ground coffee that would be for a percolator and grind the grounds to the espresso level?
Somebody bought me a lot of ground coffee for Christmas, but I want to use it in my espresso machine. So I am hoping I can go to a coffee shop that maybe uses a Burr grinder and grind the ground coffee even finer for use in the espresso machine so that I have better tasting espresso.
If this is not possible, why would it not work? It seems logical to me that you are just grinding a thicker grind down to a finer grind.
Would the grinder (Burr grinder?) somehow get gunked up with the already ground coffee?
All I want to know is this:
Can I grind already ground coffee down to an espresso ground?
I don’t care if my gourmet taste buds will not be enlightened. I just need to know if it is possible and will not mess up the machine used to grind the coffee, which I believe is one of those big red machines and probably a Burr grinder.
How many pots of coffee do you get from 1 pound of coffee?
We currently have one of those large coffee pots in our office, so we get I’d say between 8-10 cups of coffee per pot. We currently have Peet’s French Roast (nasty) and we usually put about 3-4 scoops in the coffee filter which is a regular sized coffee filter (flat). I honestly have no idea how many pots we get out of each 1 pound bag because many people make coffee here in our office. How many pots would you say you’d get from 1 pound of ground coffee?
